Most beekeeper often make mistakes when choosing the best beekeeping suit for themself. The ideal beekeeping suit not only helps you minimize the chance of getting bee stings, but it also ensures reliability and durability as well.

Most experienced beekeepers don’t require a bee suit. Because with time, beekeepers gain the ability to avoid bee stings during hive inspection.

It doesn’t mean that beekeepers don’t get stung by bees at all. They get used to bee stings and gain the ability to reduce bee stings during hive inspection.

I also don’t use a complete bee suit nowadays. Most of the time I use a long-sleeve shirt and veil only. Sometimes I use a beekeeper’s jacket as well during the seasons when bees are more aggressive.

Material Quality – The Single Biggest Decision

The material quality is the most critical while choosing a bee suit. The fun fact is, beginners often make mistakes about this particular selection. Bee suits are available mostly in 3 materials.

Zipper Quality – Where Cheap Suits Fail First

The basic requirement of a bee suit should be that it should protect against bee stings, and it must fit comfortably while using it. Though you would think these two basic requirements would be easy to meet, but many suits fail on these.

The zipper quality is also very important after the material is chosen. Make sure the suit has zippers that are quality YKK or similar brands rather than cheap plastic. Check the elastics at all openings are of good quality so that the suit doesn’t feel tight or uncomfortable.

 

Veil Type – Fencing vs Round

A complete bee suit obviously comes with a veil. A beekeeper’s veil often comes in either one of 2 types: fencing or Round. Both choices have separate advantages.

Despite providing better ventilation and a wider view, the round veil can move a lot around your head. On the other hand, Fencing veils are form-fitting and less likely to catch on things.
